Microbiologist Jobs description
Microbiologists study microbes such as algae, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. These professionals focus on the ecology, survival strategies, effects, and beneficial uses of microbes.The areas of specialization for a microbiologist include agriculture; basic research; food; healthcare; industry such as pharmaceuticals, toiletries, and biotechnology; medicine; and the environment. Further, since microbes affect every aspect of life on the earth, microbiologists work in a wide variety of settings; however, a majority of their work is laboratory-based.
The typical responsibilities of a microbiologist include monitoring and assessing samples, using a variety of identification methods to test samples, and tracking the development of specific microbes in the environment. Microbiologists also develop methods to prevent the spread of diseases and trace, monitor, and eliminate infections.
A college degree in microbiology, biological sciences, applied biology, biomedical sciences, or microbial sciences is a must even for an entry-level microbiologist job. Further, competition for vacancies is fierce, and areas such as molecular and genetic microbiology are rapidly developing and may be worth considering.
