The Thermal Properties Group (TPC) of the Advanced PIE and Characterization directorate is looking for a Research Associate (RA) to support thermal properties experiments in several facilities at Idaho National Laboratory (INL), Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC).

Our team works a hybrid 4x10 schedule located at our MFC facility with every Friday off!

Responsibilities Include:

Work on state-of-the-art equipment located in normal laboratory settings as well as radiological and nuclear facilities at the MFC. Instruments to be used include the laser flash diffusivity instrument (LFA), thermal conductivity microscope (TCM), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis instrument with mass spectrometer (TGA-MS), among others.

Work with radioactive samples as well as maintaining qualifications in numerous laboratory buildings.

Become proficient within a short amount of time in the operation and maintenance of an instrument and its detection systems or in a specific technical area such as sample preparation. The position will typically focus on a single area and will quickly gain recognized expertise in that area.

Maintain a high level of proficiency in operation of the instruments and detectors. Pursue training and professional development opportunities that maintain this proficiency. Become knowledgeable and maintain knowledge of the state-of-the art for their instrument and detection capabilities.

Maintain the instrument and detectors in a top condition, ready for use, including required calibration, requisition, and installation of replacement parts for experimental instrumentation.

Assist or act as an Instrument Scientist in developing and implementing an annual strategy for improving instrument and data analysis capabilities.

Participate in training of internal and external instrument users and junior staff members. As knowledge increases, potentially provide primary training on instrument and detector operation.

Ensure efficient instrument utilization by organizing the weekly execution of work and independently planning work to optimize workflow. This includes working with schedulers to plan instrument runtime.

Ensure data and analysis generated by the instruments is of high quality and meets customer and user needs. Ensure calibration standards are used for analysis as appropriate.

Participate in publications and technical reports, including but not limited to detailed writeups and explanations of the data collection methods and mathematical analyses performed in experiments.

Communicate with Instrument Scientists and users to ensure detailed and consistent transfer of information and analysis, including writing and improving upon instrument use guides and manuals.

Maintain data to ensure proper storage and dissemination following analysis. Some research programs will require the R.A. to follow NQA certification guidelines and documentation in the performance of measurements.

Use and develop custom data collection or analysis software and scripts in various programming languages. Write and troubleshoot instrument operational software and analysis scripts as needed. Use multiple programming languages with an intersectional understanding of OOP and scientific scripting.

Research academic literature relevant to materials, fuels, and processes associated with the thermal properties measurements.

Bachelor of Science degree Material Science, Chemistry, Physics, Chemical or Mechanical engineering, or closely related field, and 0-2 years of experience.

Ability to work varied shifts, including some nights and weekends.

Ability to be a self-starter, independent worker, and function as a strong member of a multi-disciplinary team.

This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy L clearance, which requires US Citizenship.

Preferred Requirements:

Ability to obtain and maintain Radiological II qualifications

Experience/knowledge with thermal property equipment.

Experience with computer programming or scripting.

PR0100 - Salary Grade: 200 ($81,288 - $134,100) / PR0200 - Salary Grade: 210 ($93,492 - $154,212)
