Scientist jobs are primarily engaged in the planning, conduct and analysis of experiments, either with a specific goal in mind, like in developing new products, application of these products or processes or in order to broaden general knowledge and understanding. Although scientists often carry out research thru individual efforts, there activities are usually part of a larger body of work carried out by a team of researchers.

Scientist jobs covers a wide range of disciplines which include biology, botany, zoology, neurosciences, physiology, pharmacology, cancer research, microbiology, biotechnology, and many other known fields of scientific study. These jobs are closely related to the more common health professions but are geared more on research and experimental activities.

The specific nature of work depends largely on the level of seniority of a research post, the particular scientific area studied and whether the surrounding setting is industrial or academic. Some activities which are common to most, if not all, branches of scientist careers are:

• Design and conduct of experiments;
• Processing and analysis of data and experimental findings;
• Publishing of data and experimental findings;
• Cooperating with industries and academia in the application of the results, thru field work and other means, and developing novel products and processes.
• Presenting of the experimental data and ongoing activities to associates thru conferences and at the same time producing posters summarizing the elements, methods and results of the research;
• Training and supervising staff members, as well as students in Universities, Colleges and Academies.
• Think up new research schemes and apply for funding and grants for these new research proposals.

Scientists depend on the reviews by their peers of their published works in helping to confirm their theories and inform them of possible flaws and areas for revision. It is also necessary for scientists to be well informed about the work of fellow scientists both in their specific field of study and in other branches of scientific research by reading journals and attending academic conferences.

Within the United States, the biggest and foremost source of funding for basic research and development is the Federal Government. Large budget increases at national health institutes early this decade increased basic Federal research and development expenditure, with research grants increasing both in number and amount. Recently, however, expenditure has slowed substantially.

Scientist employment outlook is expected to vary depending on the many different fields of study and there will continue to be tight competition for entry level research positions. The most growth will be in areas closely related to medical research, especially in the field of biotechnology, where employment is expected to grow by about 20 percent during the 2008 to 2018 period. Biological scientists enjoyed very big employment gains during recent decades. As industry matures, employment could moderate, however, basic research in the past few decades has resulted in new knowledge, which in turn opens up new avenues for study and producing more scientist jobs and to take this knowledge to the next level more Biological Scientists are needed.

Pharmaceutical and agricultural companies which are not directly engaged in biotechnology use techniques borrowed from biotechnology and thus now have a need to employ Biological Scientists. In addition, studies to find new and improved methods to clean and preserve the environment will help to spur job growth.

The median annual wage for scientist jobs also widely varies according to the field of study. To give just a few, Biochemists and Biophysicists earn around $84,000.00; Microbiologists earn about $64,000.00; Zoologists garner around $55,000.00. Entry level salaries average around $33,000.00 for Bachelors degree holders. Generally, government employment offered higher annual salary than private firms.

Some of the highest paid science jobs and their respective salaries are:

• Petroleum Engineers $128,000.00
• Physicists $110,000.00
• Computer and Information Scientist, Research $105,000.00
• Computer Hardware Engineer $104,000.00
• Nuclear Engineer $101,000.00
• Computer Software Engineer $100,000.00
• Aerospace Engineers $ 94,000.00
• Mathematicians $ 95,000.00
• Physical Scientists $ 92,000.00
