At the beginning of every school year, adolescents are bombarded by school counselors, parents and others who want to help them prepare for their future. The world is open at this point for a career in any area. An interest in plant genetics or marine animals can become a career in the biological sciences. A desire for investigating why things work at the cellular level could see your future as a lab rat with a career in science research.

As a young person starts to think about their future, they suddenly become aware that the classes they take today may indicate what type of college will accept them. Suddenly they understand that their GPA really does make a difference. Those already in college, begin to understand that there are requirements for employment in their areas of interest. Biological sciences and science research are life science careers that, in most cases, require a post graduate degree. A technician that wants to progress in this area can sometimes start out with an undergraduate degree and work up as they continue their education requirements. Some of the many programs included in life science career fields, would be biochemistry, plant biotechnology, microbiology and cellular engineering.

A strong attraction to the sciences would be a definite plus if considering a career in any of the life science careers. Required classes to complete a degree in almost any of the biological sciences and especially in the science research fields, require heavy prerequisites in the sciences. In addition to the appropriate degree for a specific position, an employer will also be looking for other things on your resume such as previous employment.

Employment in the field you are pursuing will go a long way in getting your resume prime attention. This could be paid or non paid. That volunteer job you had the summer of your freshman year at the local wildlife marina, will show passion, especially if you are applying for a job in micro-biology. Perhaps a lab project on the cell division of a rare plant species during your senior year brought you honors. Make sure this can easily be seen in your resume. Pay scales for positions in the life sciences vary greatly. An example of the pay scale for a microbiology specialist can be as low as $15.00 an hour for an intern to as high as six figures plus benefits for someone at the doctoral level.

A career in the life sciences can bring many years of enjoyment. As you consider which area you might like to work in for the rest of your life, think about things you like to do for pleasure. What is your passion? It has been said, that the best job, is the one that you would get out of bed in the morning to go to, even if you were not getting paid. A position in the life sciences can be a lucrative way of making a living.

A career in the field of biological sciences or science research requires a lot of careful planning. Financial scholarships and loans as well as family issues need to be taken care of so you can focus on your career plan. If employment in this area is your greatest desire, you can make it happen.
