SJMRI Research and Development: Part-Time, Days, 48-72 hrs. ppp. Off Sat. & Sun. Part time Research Intern position opening (20 hours/week) for conducting basic and translational research at St. John’s Medical Research Institute. Candidate will preferably have a background in biology with particular emphasis in microbiology. This position will serve on multiple Research & Development project teams for a variety of medical devices and antimicrobial formulations. Main responsibilities include basic microbiological procedures, microbiological testing, medical device design, device testing and reporting. Minimum requirements: •Basic knowledge of lab techniques and other related research lab protocols that pertain to the area of training. •Minimum 60 hours completed towards Bachelor’s degree in applied Science or a related appropriate discipline. A successful candidate will be familiar with basic biological and microbiological functions and/or experience in healthcare, succeed in team-oriented and independent projects, excel in detail-oriented and independent projects/responsibilities and multitasking, have excellent communication skills and experience in keeping detailed records and/or laboratory notebooks. Experience in writing and presenting scientific research papers is preferred. The primary job duty of the Research Intern is to conduct basic and translational research at the St. John’s Medical Research Institute. The Research Intern carries out research objectives that are outlined by the Principal Investigator and/or Director-Research for projects in the R&D Division. The Research Intern works with Research Scientists, Research Assistants, Research Technicians, and the Director-Research on research projects as assigned, and exercises independent thinking and judgment in the absence of established protocols and procedures. The Research Intern assists in developing guidelines, protocols, and receiving approvals for lab operations, and participates in project and data presentations to a wide variety of audiences. The Research Intern operates, tests, and repairs electronic and scientific test equipment as assigned and assists in the construction and modification of new and prototype scientific devices. The Research Intern maintains detailed and organized lab notebooks and electronic data records and compiles data for analysis. The Research Intern meets and works with St. John’s co-workers and affiliates to meet project goals and timelines and performs full literature searches and summaries on all assigned projects. The Research Intern assists in receiving IP protection on developed technologies and devices and maintains effective and timely communication with the Director- Research and all coworkers.
Job Requirements
Education: A minimum of 60 credit hours towards earning a Bachelor’s degree in an Applied Science or a related appropriate discipline is required. Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities: Effective organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are required. Ability to work successfully in groups and independently with a high level of efficiency in problem identification and problem solving. Proficiency with basic Microsoft Office and graphics software is required. Outstanding communication skills, particularly in face-to-face encounters with healthcare professionals and the public. Must have the ability to work effectively with the technical team, administrative team, clinical team, and corporate collaborators. Occasional lifting and carrying of materials and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds. Normal color vision is required in order to conduct experiments. Working Conditions: Works in a well lighted, well ventilated open office environment.
