Job Description
The ideal candidate will be a licensed Registered Nurse with a minimum of 4 years of Research Nurse experience. Previous supervisory experience is strongly preferred.
The primary purpose of the Research Nurse Supervisor position is to supervise, plan,
and administer clinical protocol operations for designated area. Affects clinical research protocols and protocol patients in the department. Scope of position is defined by the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and requires adherence to the policies and procedures of the institution.
Key FunctionsClinical Protocol Operation ManagementProvide overall coordination and facilitation of clinical research activities and protocol patient care.Make protocol assignments to research nursing staff and data entry personnel, based on a variety of criteria, such as length of experience, complexity of protocol, number of active patients, type of forms which require completion, etc.Supervise the protocol-related research activity of research nurses, study coordinators, and data coordinators to ensure compliance to all standards, policies, and quality measures.Assist the research nursing staff with the identification and development of methods for patient recruitment, consistently utilizing recruitment efforts that reflect creativity in the selection and utilization of a variety of methods available.Work with research nurses on a rotating basis to become familiar with their protocols in order to provide guidance, correction when needed, and coverage when short-staffed.Collaborate with physicians, research nurses, and protocol sponsors when appropriate regarding protocol design, budgeting, planning, implementation, and evaluation.Maintain open communication with physicians and regulatory area to be aware of upcoming protocols.
Clinical Protocol Activities - as detailed in the Research Nurse position description.Coordinate activities related to initiation and conduct of clinical trials.Participate in protocol-specific clinical tasks as needed.Assist the primary investigator in collection and evaluation of data.
Administrative/SupervisoryOversee activities of clinical trials personnel to provide guidance, correction when needed, and coverage when short-staffed.Participate in the interview and selection process for research personnel.Develop plans and processes for integrating all aspects of the clinical research process and work to implement these processes.Participate in management of departmental clinical research activities and staff, with emphasis on effective utilization of resources.Complete performance evaluations of personnel directly supervised.Communicate and administer departmental and institutional policy and procedures to personnel in the research nursing area.Ensure appropriate workload assignments to research personnel through communication with the Research Nurse Manager.
Professional DevelopmentParticipate in the coordinate the training and development of personnel in the research nursing area, with emphasis on effective orientation and continuing education.Identify needs and provide training related to administration, management, and monitoring of patients on clinical trials.Mentor and encourage clinical research and supervisory staff to develop through participation in professional organizations, serving on committees, attending journal presentations, seminars or conferences.Ensure that research nurses collect CEUs to meet Board of Nursing requirements. Encourage research nurses to keep curriculum vitae up-to-date to reflect participation in professional growth activities.

The above functions require the following abilities and skills:
Ability to be clearly understood by verbal communication in face-to-face encoun­ters and by telephone.Ability to read printed and written data and to assimilate pertinent information in order to compose written correspondence. A strong command of the English language and ability to communicate well verbally and in writing. Must be able to understand verbal and written directions. Ability to manually record data, use a computer and typewrit­er keyboard.Ability to respond and assist other employees and visitors, as required.Demonstration of skill in consensus and team building. Ability to travel to and from different destinations, including inpatient and outpatient care areas. Ability to maintain a satisfactory work environment by organizing and redistributing files, records, etc., requiring bending, stooping, reaching, lifting, etc.
Job Description-Requirements:
Education Required:
Graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
Scope:License/Certification Required:
Current State of Texas license to practice professional nursing (RN). Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
Two years registered nurse experience with four years research nurse experience.
Oncology registered nurse experience.
